This is BIG news! Microsoft, the company not known to being generous to users has launched a FREE and Open Source Blogging Platform !

Oxite , as it is called is not just a blogging platform. It has much more than that.

Alright, at first look, it seems it’s got just about everything you would need to build any type of website.

The site says:

Oxite is an open source, standards compliant, and highly extensible content management platform that can run anything from blogs to big web sites. We know this because it runs MIX Online.

Oxite - Microsoft free, open source, blogging, content management platform

The main site, visitmix which acts like a community for web designers and developers also uses Oxite .

Some of the exciting features of Oxite:

  • Pingbacks, trackbacks, anonymous or authenticated commenting
  • Gravatar support
  • RSS feeds at any page level
  • Support for MetaWebLog API (think Windows Live Writer integration made easy)
  • Web admin panel
  • Support for Open Search format allowing users to search your site using their browser’s search box
  • Add pages as a child of another page
  • Support for multiple blogs on one site

Oxite was released on December 5, 2008 and is currently in Alpha.

Oxite requires:

  • SQL Express 2005 or 2008

From what I know, you would need a windows based hosting plan to be able to run Oxite. This can be a let down for all those who are on Linux hosting.

If you plan to use Oxite for your site, do not forget to notify them about it since they would be putting up a link to your site from the main site!
